About This Chapter
The scene opens with a splash of water in the hotel swimming pool. It's the first time we've seen marin since she arrived on the island, and she's thrilled to see her. She wants to swim with her, but she can't because the hotel doesn't have a swimming pool, which is common sense. She tells Maria to change into her new clothes, and they're off to the concert hall for a preview. She wonders where marin's family came from, and if they'd been worried about her before she arrived, she might have had a hard upbringing. She's not worried about marin, she says, because everyone will be happy and happy to go home, and everyone will just want to go back to their boring lives. She says she'd rather do nothing than think about her, and that's selfish. She asks Maria to take care of herself, and then she says she wants to take a picture of all the people at the festival with her new camera, so she can share it with her friends. She looks around the hall and sees the assistant manager of the festival, who's been watching her. He's gone, and Maria is worried that he's going to continue watching her and kidnapping her when she is alone. Maria says that the festival's motto is to enjoy life no matter what. She invites everyone to a party the next day, and says that she'll take them to the venue.
