In this chapter, we learn that the captain of the ship, William Turner, is in love with a young woman named Darnay, and he is willing to risk his life in order to win her hand in marriage. In order to do so, he must win a game of dice known as "Liar's Dice." In this game, the player guesses correctly and the person who guesses incorrectly is called a liar. The player who guesses correctly wins the game, but the person guessing incorrectly loses the game. In this case, Darnay's fate is tied to the outcome of the dice game. If he guesses correctly, he will win the game; if he guesses incorrectly, the person calling him a liar will win. If Darnay guesses wrong, he'll lose the game . In other words, he is risking his life to win the woman of his dreams.
