About This Chapter
"Dead Man's Chest" is the title of the first chapter of the book. It's a reference to the famous pirate song "Barbossa's Pet Monkey Jack" . The song is about a monkey that's lost its way and is now stuck in a cave. The pirates have found the key to the cave, but they're not sure where to find the key. They decide to stand their men down and remove the key from the cave. They're also going to ask the captain of the cave to unlock the key so they can find the treasure they've been looking for. The captain says that he's not sure what the key is for, but it's the same key that Barbossa used to open the door to his cave. Barbossa asks the captain if the rum is always gone, and the captain says it isn't. He also says that Davy Jones told him that one soul was bound to crew for a hundred years on a ship. Davy says he made a trade with the captain, too, but that the deal was only for two souls. Davy tells the captain that if he doesn't get back to his stations, he'll have to go back to Davy's side for him. Davy asks where he can get the black pearl, and Davy says it is his. Davy then tells him to tap the six taps on the wall and wait for him to come back. Davy finally finds the pearl.
