The novel opens with a flashback to the day of the fight. It's the morning of the first day of school, and Shmoop's mother, Milady, and her son, Jyun, are getting ready to move into their new home. They've just moved in, and they're all excited to see how things are going between Milady and her new crush, Jyu. Jyu tells Milady that they've changed a lot since the day they fought, and that Milady's nose is bleeding from the first fight. He also tells her that he's kicked her, and she's not going to get any better. Milady is shocked, but Jyu assures her that she'll make it through the fight okay. He's even more shocked when Milady tells him that she put his picture in her wallet to block the hole in the wall where her lover's picture was hidden. He doesn't want Milady to know that he loves her, so he put the picture in his wallet to hide it from Milady when they meet again. He says he'd never have seen the picture if Milady hadn't told him about it. He adds that he was planning on going back to school, but Milady told him that it would be awkward to go back, so they'd have to act "boyish" for the rest of their lives. He tells his mother that he and Milady were destined to get married, and he'll never be able to imagine his life without her.
