About This Chapter
The shop manager, Bob, and his assistant, Miss Betsey, are worried about a storm that's about to hit the area. They're worried that a tree nearby might have a "weird jinx" that will crush the shop's wall. They decide to stay inside and wait for the storm to pass, but they don't want to take any customers in, because it's "dangerous" in the shop. The manager says that he's heard a loud noise outside, and he went to check it out. He found a tall tree nearby, and the sound reminded him of the one he heard outside the shop two days before. He's worried that the tree might have "a weird jinx" and crush the wall, but he doesn't know what to do. He decides to go out and buy some planks to cover up the hole in the wall. He also decides to take out his favorite glass, which he took to shelter a flower plant from the storm. He asks Miss Barbary if she's okay, and she says that she is. He tells her that the shop is closed, and that she can have a hot cup of coffee in the meantime. She's not sure if the coffee is bad or not, but she'll have to wait. She asks if the girl in the mirror is the same girl who took the glass out of the rain yesterday, and when she finds out, she thanks the shop manager for his kindness. She thanks him for being kind to her, and says that since he ate at the shop three years ago, he has become the "biggest fan" of the bakery. He works as a part-timer at the bakery, which means that he has a lot of free time to himself.
