About This Chapter
The next morning, the Governess complains to her mother that she cannot sleep at night because of the portrait of her dead grandmother hanging in the family room. The Governess tells her mother to go to sleep earlier, but she refuses, saying that she has had a bad sleep since her grandmother's death and that her eyes are swollen every morning. She asks her mother if the exam is on the horizon, and she tells her that she will go out with her father to study. When she asks why she has not been able to sleep, she is told that the exam will be the next week. She then asks why they have kept the portrait in the portrait room, and her mother says that she wants her granddaughter to do well in the exam. She tells her to go back to her room and study, and when she returns, she asks if they have locked the portrait up in the storeroom. She says that her grandmother is dead, and that she is still young and does not know what has happened to the portrait. She begs her mother not to disturb her with the portrait, as she has an exam tomorrow.
