Back at home, Jane is furious with her brother-in-law. He's late for class, and she's been waiting for him to come home. She's also furious that he's taken the girl who's supposed to be his own girlfriend instead of his own. Jane asks why he waited so long for someone to give her a ride home instead of her own girlfriend, and he tells her that he doesn't think the girl is the right fit for him. He says that he has his own answer now, and that's that Jane is the girl he chose himself based on his own affection and judgment, to accompany him throughout his life. Jane calls him a "bastard" and a "lowly scum" , and accuses him of having an affair behind Jane's back with a "damning b-tch" .
