This chapter opens with a flashback to a conversation between the Governess and her daughter. The Governess tells her daughter that she is a friend of hers and that she has a present for her. She tells her that she can do anything she wants with her mind. She says that she would be happy to help her sister if she had the right attitude. She then tells her sister that she will be helping her sister prepare for the ball that night. She promises to give her everything she has to do so, and she promises to get her to the ball.
