About This Chapter
The narrator begins by asking why anyone would want to change his or her last name. He explains that it can be because of family problems, but that if we go too far, we get deeper issues. For example, if a person's family has problems, then that person might want to cut all ties with them. He tells the narrator that his mother has had a difficult relationship with her, and that he hasn't really been able to get along with her. The narrator wonders what kinds of problems would make someone want to break off all ties. He asks the narrator if she's prepared to live on her own, and the narrator tells him that she is. He then asks her why she moved to this place, and she says that she hoped that she'd find her way in the world, like her brother did. He'd probably changed his name, she says, and all that was left were pieces of what they once were. She then asks if there's any chance that the family's past will come back together, and if that's the case, then the narrator says that it's not a good idea to close the door on the family, because it won't make them stop having nightmares
