About This Chapter
In this short scene, we learn that the Governess is in the middle of a live-action production of her play, "The Mysteries of Night." The Governess tells the audience that she has come to tell them more about her, and that they should follow her script and watch the play. She tells them that she will make the play a "broad cast" with the highest view points in the country. The audience gasps, and the little girl asks if the play will be cut short. The little girl wonders if the world will become a "better place" because of the play, and she asks if people have changed one bit since she has lived for so long. She asks if he has killed more people than he has, and he replies that people have killed more than he did. He tells her that humans run governments, go to war, and kill the innocent and the young. They try to "stompel on and them," and they force the weaker to their will. They use them if there is a small minority that they deem "different." The larger becomes "justice," destroying and threatening "others," and this is your "human instinct," he tells her. He says that he does not know if he is watching the play now, but he is sure that he will eventually.
