About This Chapter
It's been a while since we've heard anything from the Governess, but she's finally ready to tell us what's in the letter. She's sorry that she has been involved in such a difficult situation, but it's time to let her go before she gets involved more. She tells him to take his money from the envelope and to take all the things he bought for her. She also tells him not to ask for his salary, which he's refused to do in the past. The Governess tells him that she thinks this is the best choice for him and his family. She asks him to drop what he means by "the right choice" for both of them. She says that one day, something happened to him and he disappeared. She still doesn't know why. She wishes that he had someone else to confide in. She was worried that he wasn't having a good life and that he didn't have enough money to live on. But what if they got into an argument and stopped seeing one another? For her, he was one of her few friends. He's usually not attached to anyone, but for her, she was his only friend. Maybe now that he has someone he can confide in, he'll have someone to confide to. She wants to be with him now, but there is nowhere else for her to go.
