About This Chapter
"Four legs" is the title of this chapter, and it refers to the fact that one can think of one's partner's movements as a "extension" of his or her own body. For example, if one is dancing with a partner that is 200 years older than one, one can feel the weight of the other's unity. This is especially true when the other partner is a person who is not as old as the other. In other words, one cannot simply dance with another person, but must think of the person one is with as an "extension." This is a great way to think about dancing, because it allows one to think of another's body in a completely different way than one would think of his own. For instance, one might think of a person's legs as a four-legged extension, while the other leg is a five-legged one. One might also think of someone's posture as a six-legged person, while another person is a seven-legged man. This analogy is especially apt for the two of them, because they are both dancing with people who are older than they are, and one of the legs is a man who is "200 years old." The other leg, however, is an extension of the body of someone who is younger than he or she is, so one can see the difference between the two men. The two men are dancing with each other, but they are also dancing with other people, so they are not in the same position as one another. One of the reasons why one man is older than the other is because he is physically frail, and the other man is younger because he has
