At the end of the first half, the two young men have lost their chance to win the game. They are so dejected that they decide to take off their shoes in order to cheer each other up. The narrator tells us that they are the "worst team they've ever seen" and that they don't have a chance of winning the game without a goal. He tells them to take the ball away from the other team and wait for him to signal them with a whistle. He also tells them that if they fail to score, they will be laughed at by the other players.
