The scene opens with a flashback to the beginning of the novel, where a young woman named Yugang Wu arrives at her employer, the elephant company, to collect money owed to her by the company. The young woman is shocked to learn that her boss, the company's head designer, is also in the company to collect the money. She asks the young man to explain why he is there, and the man tells her that he has come to collect it because the company owes him money and he has been stopped three times from doing so. He tells the young woman that he is a "pushover" and that he will make life difficult for her if she does not stop him from collecting the money
