The scene opens with the arrival of Lady Stewart's carriage, which has been delayed because of bad weather. Prince Lysander enters and asks if Lady Stewart can attend the opera in his box. Lady Stewart is not able to attend because she is pregnant. He asks her to join him in the box so that they can watch the opera together.
