In this short scene, we learn that Sarashina has fallen in love with her son, Subaru. We learn that her father, Yoichi, has already left for Paris to start his own business, and that his son, subaru, has been born. We also learn that the two of them fell in love at a theater when Yoichi was trying to launch his business, but that he abandoned it when he realized that he would not be able to support his son's ambitions. In other words, he abandoned his son and left him to fend for himself. We're also told that Yoichi's father, Subaru's uncle, has also abandoned him and is now living in Paris, where he works as a school teacher. We get a brief glimpse of what it's like to live in Paris.
