About This Chapter
In this chapter, the narrator tells us that he had hoped his family would be "normal" and happy, but he was wrong. His father had become an alcoholic and had caused his and his mother's divorce. After that, he began living with his mother, who had remarried and brought her son back to live with them. The narrator tells his stepfather that his daughters are not his blood, but that he is doing everything he can to make them happy. He tells him to slap him, but slap him doesn't make him repeat himself. He says he's doing everything his stepfather asks him to do, and he'll be fine. He asks his stepfather to let him know if he needs anything, and his stepfather says that he didn't realize that his daughter had become a woman until the day before. He then asks his mother if she'd like anything. The mother says that she would, but she's busy washing the dishes. The father asks if he can squeeze the dishes until later, and the father says that it's his job to do it. He wants to know what's wrong with his daughter, and she says that her mother was smiling at them. He's annoyed that his stepdaughter is acting like a woman, so he asks her if she would like to be nice to him. She says yes, and they go off to eat some food together.
