The narrator tells us that he's often toiling at work. One day, he notices a man staring at his co-worker. He thinks it's because the man is sick, but the narrator doesn't tell anyone about it. He's worried that the man might have suspected them of something. The narrator is shocked that someone would notice them staring at each other. He says that no one has ever suspected the two of anything before, and that they've been living together for a while now. He asks if she's feeling sick, and the narrator says that she was a bit "lost in thought" after they got new furniture and stuff. She tells him that she'll "cause trouble" at work if anyone finds out about their relationship. She says that both of their lives together and their jobs are important to her, and she hopes that he can give her some serious thought. She asks him if he feels the same way about chatter, and he says that he does. He also asks if they're doing well at the job they took over, and if they have a lover. He tells her that he lied about having a girl friend to one of his friends, and they'll have to meet up soon in a group, so he asks her to bring her girl friend.
