About This Chapter
The Underground Man tells the Underground Man that he's ready to go. He's just got to get his manager to talk to the guy at the theater. He wants to know what's going on with the plan. He also wants to make sure that the manager knows that they're planning a big party to celebrate the birthday of the little girl. He says he'll share the money with the manager when he gets back from the theater, but he doesn't want to tell the manager that the party is going to be a big one. He tells the manager to get a hold of the theater's manager and tell him that they have a big birthday party coming up. He asks the manager if the girl will be the fourth, and the manager says that she's too young to wait for a birthday party. He adds that the girl is too young for the big one, so they'll have to wait until the girl turns four. He gives the manager a list of all the people who've already paid to go to the party, and he says they've all paid five hundred dollars to see the girl. They're all there to celebrate her birthday, so why not go ahead and do it now? He says they can nip the evil flower in the bud with luck, but they need a guardian to keep them from getting too carried away. They need him, he says, to be the "best fighter" in the room, because he hasn't shown any good impulse control in the past. Plus, he adds, they need someone to protect them from the "de destroyer" who's about to do them a big, big favor by killing them all. He warns them that they
