In this final scene of the novel, the young narrator and his older brother are outside in the cold, and the younger narrator encourages the older one to eat and go out for a walk. The older brother tells the younger one to be quiet and not to worry about his appearance. The younger brother tells him that he is a year younger than the older man, and that he should be eating and going out. The narrator tells the older brother that he has taken him out of all of his schoolmates, and he will go back first.
