About This Chapter
The villagers of the village are in danger. They pray with faith that the "sacrificing spirit" from above will protect them. The patriarch tells them that the spirit of sacrifice is the "spirit of sacrifices" of the tribe. It guards the village, and frightens away the beasts. The brat asks if they need to sacrifice every day, and the patriarch replies that as long as they are sincere, the spirit will protect the village. He says that he always feels a "intimate bond" with the "willow god" . The village chief asks why they call the dead tree "a dead tree" when it was struck by lightning. The boy tells the chief that his father was seriously injured in the fight with the lightning. His uncle begs him not to die, but the boy says that his uncle always treated him like his own son. The villagers go to the village chief and ask him what is wrong. The chief says that the hunting party has been attacked by some of the villagers, and that the boy has been shot. The men go off to attack the village and kill the boy, but he stays behind to fight them off
