The next day, the lord of the city commands the village chiefs to recruit soldiers to protect the surrounding villages. The old man of the village complains that the village has lost favor with the city's rulers because of the autumn harvest. He says that if the village had not been protected, it would have been attacked by the bandits. The village chief says that the bandits are different from the jie lu, and that they will leave the village some scrap once they are done fighting. He tells the other village chiefs that the city rulers are cruel and greedy and that it is their turn to plunder the village. The chest hair village chief thanks the old man for his help, but the village's assets are limited after the harvest, so he asks someone to send him some money and grain. He then tells the brothers to get to work and repair the houses for them.
