About This Chapter
The next day, the narrator leaves for the next destination. He tells us that the girl he loves has been wandering around town. He wonders why she hasn't left, and wonders how she will feel if she knows he's been there countless times. The narrator is glad that she's gotten a scholarship, because it will make him feel better about his feelings for her. He also tells us about the old man he met in the village. The old man is named zhoujianqing, and he was married a medic. He says that war is brutal, but that it's a wonderful place with all its troubles. He asks the narrator to tell the story of his love for the girl, and the narrator says that he'd like to do so. The girl he likes is going to go to the village and he wants to tell her his story. He doesn't want her to know who he is yet, but he wants her to fall in love with him again. He thinks that the war was brutal, and that many people lost their families and loved ones during the war. He's not sorry, he says, because without the war, he would have met the girl and fallen in love. He adds that there's no need for a war, since the people who remain will be able to build their homes in the future generations.
