The next morning, Darnay wakes up and tells his father that he has been unable to sleep the night before because of the wound on his wrist. He tells Darnay that the burial ceremony for General Westmoreland is to take place the next day, and that Darnay will be there to attend it. Darnay promises that he will share his long robes with General Westmoreland, and he will prepare his lance and sword for the battle. When Darnay asks if he can help take care of his mother's illness, his father promises to do so.
