In this chapter, the narrator tells us that he's been having an affair with his wife's husband. He's worried about how his wife is going to react to his intense passion for her. She's also worried that her husband will be able to hear how hard she's pounding on the stove. The narrator is all, "I've got to be careful about how hard I'm pounding on this stove" . He tells her that she can draw a "deeper flavor" out of her sex life by using her cooking knowledge. She tells him that she and her husband had sex the night before, and that the wife was worried that she was being too hard on her husband. She says that she'd like to show him her own cooking--she'll show him a recipe of her own--but she can't bring herself to show her husband her own recipe. The two of them start to argue about how they're going to have sex, and the narrator says that they'll just leave everything on the table, and then they can have sex. He says that sex should be "enjoyed as a sport" , and she says that's exactly what she is doing. She starts to feel a "smack" on the back of her neck, and he says it's so good that she has never felt anything like it before. She feels like she has sex with the husband of her friend's wife, but she doesn't know what to do.
