In this chapter, the Underground Man explains how he came to be a part of the Time Machine. He tells the audience that he's here to help the bta, the government agency that keeps track of time. The Underground Man says that if the Bta discovers that he was the one who caused the first attack on the World Trade Center, it will go after him in order to prevent the second attack from happening. He explains that the BtA is necessary because it saves lives, but it also creates time "remnants" , which means that the people who live in the past are doomed to die in the future. He also explains that if he destroys the accelerators, they will all be stuck in their own time. If the accelerators blow, the people inside could be killed or injured. He says that he will never become the man who created the time machine, because he'll never be able to blend in with the rest of the world.
