The novel opens with a discussion of love and marriage between men and women. The narrator asks the reader to imagine what it would be like to be in love with a man and to imagine how it would feel to be loved by a woman. He asks the audience to imagine that it were possible for a man to love a woman and a woman to love him. The reader is then presented with a hypothetical scenario in which a man were to marry a woman, and the two women were to have children. The hypothetical scenario is that a man would marry one of the women and the woman would marry the man. The two women would have children and the man would become a bar owner.
