When the narrator returns home, he finds that his wife, Nozomi, has gone out for a "masseur" massage. He is shocked to learn that her husband's friend, a "sage" , has been introduced to her by the masseur, and that she has gone to the "high-grade coal cuisine" of the restaurant. The narrator is not able to understand why his wife would go out for such a "massage" when she has a "boy friend," but he is able to deduce that she is having an affair with a "mismatched" young man.
