In this chapter, we learn that haruhi's parents fought with him because of the way he treated them when he was younger. Aww, that's not the first time we've heard this story, but it's the first we hear it from a kid who's been raised by his parents. The narrator tells us that he wants to get along with his parents, even though they haven't yet met each other. He also says that he'd like to clear the air between them so that they don't have any ill feelings. He adds that he hasn't met his parents yet, so it'll be a while before they get along. He says he's happy to be around ten years old, and he thanks his parents for giving him a present on his birthday: a cake and a bouquet of flowers. He's so happy that he can't wait to tell everyone about it.
