About This Chapter
The next morning, Dr. Rivers is astonished to find that the patient's body has been removed from the body and placed in a cart for transportation to the surgeon's office. He wonders why the surgery is being performed in a hospital that has not been profitable for some time, and he wonders if the surgeon will be able to find someone to perform the surgery for him. The surgeon explains that he has been interested in a new surgical procedure, and that he wants to perform a brain-dead patient for a client from overseas. The patient is judged to be brain dead, and the surgeon performs the surgery in an emergency. The client tells the surgeon that he is amazed by his skill and that the surgery took only a few minutes. The doctor explains that the client is a generous man, and it must be very hard for him to care for his single mother. He says that as surgeons, it is their duty to try their best in the surgery room. He asks the patient to stop saying silly things, and says that he values the doctor so much that he would not have forced him to perform this surgery if he did not want to. He tells the patient that if he had refused the surgery, he would have lost his trust in the doctor and would have made less money.
