Ashidaka and Darnay return to the city, they are shocked to find that the city has been destroyed by a massive explosion. Darnay tries to calm them down, telling them that they have only four days to save the city before it is destroyed. He tells them that he has been saving up for four days, and that he will run if the city is attacked. He then launches into a tirade against the city's inhabitants, claiming that they are "hungry for arms" and that his mother has kept him safe by keeping him away from the city. He urges Darnay to help his mother, who has been injured in the explosion, and he tells her that he is here to help her. He says he is sorry that he did not realize that he was a terrible mother and that the explosion was all his doing. He reminds Darnay that he and his mother both protected him from the attack. He asks Darnay if he would have killed his mother if he had not done what he did. She replies that she would not have done it, but Darnay says that he cannot let the city be destroyed because he is part of their stash of weapons. She tells him that he should take care of his part of the stash so that it does not fall into the hands of the enemy. She then asks him if there is another army that can destroy the city
