The chapter opens with a flashback to a time when the Governess was living with her grandparents. The Governess complains to her husband that she has not been able to eat for two days and that she is worried about her germaphobia. She tells him that she will not eat if he does not let her out of the house. He tells her that his grandfather was with them and that the house was much better when he was there
