Even though he's got a ton of power, he still loses. He's the captain of all the other players on the battlefield, and they can't catch him. They're all going to have to fight this guy. The captain of the other team's team is an npc, which means that the captain is their actual leader. That's right, the guy who's actually their captain is the guy they saw leading the team before the battle.
