About This Chapter
The Governess is pleased to see that the Governess still respects her honor code. She tells her that it is her mother's "magic mir" that keeps her from cheating on the test. She asks her to return her property if she can pass the test, and she promises to do so if she is able to pass the next time around. She says that she is afraid of her mother sometimes, but that she knows she loves her mother in her "own way." She tells him that he is sixteen years old and that he has lived in only one place his whole life. He says that he and his mother have much in common, but they are not automatically like each other. He asks her if she would like to go swimming, but she says she would rather stay on the island where she lives. He tells her to make a wish, throw the rock in the lake, and then he tells her he loves her.
