The narrator tells the story of how the wolves were created by Gaia, who wanted to rid the world of them. Gaia created the wolves to keep them at bay, but Gaia has not returned. The narrator explains that the Duchess never understood how to control the wolves, and so they make them for her daughters who die. The women of the city want to know why the Duchess killed a girl, and the narrator says that he killed the girl because he was looking for a job. The woman says that the community decided that killing the wolves was wrong, but the narrator points out that they are supposed to bring the women to their city. He tells the women that he has been a slave all his life, and that they want him to know that his brothers are here, a girl defeats the wolves.
