About This Chapter
In this chapter, the Governess tries to make sense of the events of the previous day. The Governess has been fired from her job and is now living in the wrong apartment. She tries to explain to her sister why she is there, but she cannot understand the meaning of the words "life" and "death" . She tells her sister that the gods told her she could take a vacation and that she could stay with death. She also tells her that the animals in her apartment were bright-eyed and that they were looking out for her. She says that she has made lots of things for herself at home, but that she forgot to put them in the place where she would like them to be. She then says that death is not so melancholy as she had thought, and that he is not used to being friends. She goes on to say that she is dying to know what her landlord will say about the incident. She adds that she thinks he will have bad manners and will have bigger problems in the future. She warns her sister to be careful with life, as she may be "childish" but she is still the "angel of life." She tells him to take care of her and to keep her safe. He says that he will not be a baby-sitter, as he is "mortal," but he promises that they will be fine
