About This Chapter
This chapter opens with a description of the greenhouse, a place where people sleep in order to avoid waking up in the middle of the night. The narrator tells us that the sleepers usually sleep in the bodies of water, but that he feels a "tyrant shadow rising" . He calls the other guardians and tells them to wake him up. He tells the narrator to sleep and then he'll see if he's still what he used to be. He's not happy about the fact that he lost his freedom, but he doesn't want to give up his freedom to anyone. He wants to know what's going on. He asks the narrator if she wants to bind him to her mistress again, and the narrator tells her that she can do that. She's just not happy that she's losing her freedom. She wants to find out what the source of her good luck is. She wonders if the guardian of the park, taranis, is a good guy, and wonders if it's even healthy for him to be bathed in the "milk of human kindness." The narrator says that she already has what she wants: the human, the officiants, the names of the witches, the sacrifices, the fire, the hearts of witches, and that copy of the story she wants. She says that her beloved cursed her now, and she curses her forever. She tells her mistress that she may be her last curse, and asks her to take her mistress to one of her mistresses. She reminds her of the time she saw
