About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a flashback to a time before Nemo's arrival in Freetown, when Nemo was a young boy who was saved by a doctor named Dr. Roberts. The flashback shows that Nemo was saved because he had a vision in which he saw the city of Freetown and a group of people who had come there to get transplanted organs. The narrator tells us that the people who came to Freetown are called "strange visitors" because they were transplanted from a "shared affliction farm" . The doctor who transplanted the first patient, Nemo, refused to take any calls from the strange visitors. The second patient, Billy Ham's kidney, was also refused by the doctor. The third patient, Yondre, was refused a call from the doctor because he was a Jewish man who had been transplanted from an African country. The fourth patient, Mikhatl, was turned away by the doctors because she was a black woman who had received an organ from a white man. She was also turned away because she had received a black man's organ from another white woman. The fifth patient, Dr. Bledsoe, had been turned away for being a homosexual man. The sixth patient, Mr. Roberts, had also refused to accept any call from anyone but the doctor who had transplanted him. The seventh patient, the mayor's son, has been turned down by the mayor because he is a homosexual. The mayor is the son of the man who received the organ from the farmer.
