About This Chapter
In this chapter, we are introduced to a new character named Peter. He is the brother of Erik, who is the main antagonist of the novel. Erik is a small, dark-skinned creature who has a dark heart, which is a curse on the owner of the manor where he lives. When he hears the rumor that three families are moving to the manor, he is shocked to find that his brother, Erik, cannot hear him. He tells his brother that the manor has a "deep stench of death" and that the smell is coming from "Keres" , the evil spirit who lives in the manor. When Erik sees a piece of his heart on his forehead, he realizes that it is the last piece of Erik's heart that he has left. He asks his brother why he would want to kill the children. Erik tells him that the children are "good diversion" . He then slaps his master for asking him to do such a thing. When the master realizes that he is laughing at him, he slaps him again. The two of them wait for Erik to leave, and when he does, they are interrupted by the arrival of the butterflies. The butterflies are the master's creations, but they are functional, and he seems to enjoy his new prey. He apologizes for the inconvenience, but the butterflies catch him behind him.
