The chapter opens with a flashback to the night of the murder at the manor. Peter is in the hallway of the house, looking through his brother's portrait, when he sees his sister, Heidi, and two other children. Heidi is running away from the painting, and the children are looking at the portrait of Peter's sister. Peter realizes that he is the only person in the house who is not in the portrait, and he wonders why no one has seen him since the beginning of the story. He believes that he has been deceiving himself for the past 50 years by being a ghost of his sister.
