About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a brief description of the scene in which the gang splits up. The gang is reunited with their sister, Mary, who has been hiding out in the forest. Mary tells the gang that she and her sister will work together to escape the town of Mone, which the army is planning to capture for treating the geezer like a private property. The geezer is talking to an old man, and the old man tells Mary that the town is a long way away, and that she should take a train from Mone to get there. Mary wonders why Mary is so sad, and Mary tells her that they'll work hard together to get back to Mone. Mary says that she's getting hungry, and she'd like to sell her bag of gold cotton, but she can't find a place to sell it. She's afraid that the wet parts of the cotton will turn to black, so she splashes the wet stuff on the ground to make sure it doesn't turn to mud. Mary thinks she'll look at the cotton again, but instead she gulps a magic pill that makes her thirty times faster. She says that this is why she became a thief, because the magic pills make her do 30 times faster than she can do anything in her surroundings. Mary and Mary look at her bag, which is full of gold, and they both realize that it's been stolen. Mary is worried about her missing picture of her daughter, and her wallet has been stolen, so now she can go meet her uncle, who bought her lunch, too.
