In this chapter, we learn that the prisoners are planning to free their master, drum, in exchange for the capture of the warden of Black-Vox, the prison in which they are being held. The prisoners, however, are not planning to escape. They are only planning to use the prison as a staging ground for their attack on the prison. As they prepare to enter the prison, the warden, grog foto, asks them to trade the warden torch for the freedom of their master. They agree to do so, and the warden tells them that the prison is armed with weapons and that it is an impenetrable fortress. As the prisoners prepare to leave, they are interrupted by the head jailer, who asks them if they are planning on killing the prisoners themselves. They reply that they are not, and that they will kill all the prisoners they can before they can escape.
