About This Chapter
This chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the novel, where the narrator explains that Madame Fauntleroy was "the most beautiful person" on earth. She was a beautiful woman who grew old and became "disheartened" when she was no longer able to look back at the past. She had an altar that contained the power of five elements, but it had been left behind. The altar contained the spirit of her dead brother, who was the son of the woman who had killed her. The narrator tells the audience that the altar is reserved for blood sacrifices, and that even the "most fearsome beasts" will not be able to escape it. He urges the audience to come to the altar and bring his brother back. He tells them that he has to save the child first, and then bring back his brother. He says that he will present them with "smoked meat" and "wheels and engravings" . He asks the gods to bless him with "long life" and to grant him "mortality till his hair turns white." The narrator curses his brother for being the one who killed the woman. He cries out that if he is the son, he must kill his mother. He then goes on to say that if she is the mother, then she must force her brother to die. He curses the narrator for being so ruthless. He calls him "so ruthless" and tells him to stay where he is, so that he does not make the situation worse. He laughs at the idea that the narrator is actually a "negro of lady so and so"
