About This Chapter
In this chapter, Roxane laments the fact that she is unable to lead the Capoeiras because of her bad feet. She is afraid that if she is chosen as a royal librarian, she will be forced to choose someone who does not like her. Roxane says that she believes faith and ignorance are equally important, but she does not believe that ignorance should be the main concern. A friend of Roxane's tells her that if they are chosen as royal librarians, they will open a central library for the entire population. Knowledge will be available 24 hours a day, and the librarians will still play a critical role in this. The narrator says that the king knew that the knowledge would be maleficent, and that free access would destroy the human mind. He knew that knowledge could destroy the mind easily. He also knew that no one would seek out the knowledge. He said that he would open the library at the end of the conversation. Heina and Roxane agree that the librarians are assholes, but they do not hate them for the mistake they have made. They say that they have to take the place of the royal librarian now that Roxane is gone.
