About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that freedom is a "ilusion" , a "greater ideal" . It's not free, but it's better than not being free at all . The narrator tells us that when we think of freedom, we think about it as a greater ideal than it really is. We can't really be free, though, because the cage keeps us from flying freely in the sky. Our owners keep us from being free, because they're afraid that if we try to do too much, they'll kill us. They're trying to find the "right cage" for us to live in, so that's why they keep us locked up in the cage. We learn that the ice cream is coming soon, and the narrator is psyched to be able to buy it. He's also psyched that he's finally tricked the master of the game into buying ice cream. He tells the narrator that he needs to get stronger, so he can play the game again. But the narrator doesn't know what else to do with the books he took from the library. He just wants to read them, so
