About This Chapter
The narrator introduces us to Hiroshi's friend Akahoshi, who has won several photo contests, including one at the school where Hiroshi works. The narrator notes that Amemura is no longer at school, and Hiroshi is now a student at a nearby middle school. Hiroshi tells the narrator that he came to take a picture of the school's swimming pool, and the narrator is impressed. He says that he's going to take the picture slow and steady, so that it doesn't look as if it's been taken in the middle of the day. He's also impressed by the temple scene in the picture, and he says he'd love to see the work of akahoshi at the lens inn, where she's a new tenant. He tells her that she'll have to submit several different versions of the same photo, but that she should submit the best one, because that's how the club judges the photo. He also says that sometimes the best photo is the one that appeals to a different audience than the one the photo was taken originally for, and that means that the photo has appeal even if it wasn't taken by a specific audience in the first place.
