This chapter opens with a flashback to the events of the previous chapter, which took place in the Underground Man's underground lair. The Underground Man, now disguised as a young woman, is awakened by the sound of a girl's voice, and he realizes that the girl is the one who had dragged him into the underground. The young woman tells him that she had created the underground space for him, and that he had entered it only to find that it was his secret base. He tells her that a friend of his had mentioned the Underground Men to him and that they had taken her away. He asks her to rescue the friend, and she agrees to do so.
