It's morning, and the narrator is getting ready to go to the pool with his friend yoshimi. He's worried about how he's going to look in front of a bunch of guys. He wants to know if they're all dressed up for the pool party, and if it's a man or a woman. The narrator tells him that he'll have to pass a test in two weeks to get a job as a piano teacher. He also tells the narrator that he needs to buy a music book so he won't have to memorize a piece of music that's been laid out for him to play. He asks if they can go shopping together before the test, and they agree to do so. The two of them head off to the swimming pool, and when they get there, the narrator realizes that he hasn't been wearing a skirt in public in a long time. He remembers when he was in school, and he remembers that he was supposed to give a gorilla a skirt as a gift, but he didn't want to give it to a girl who was wearing one. He thinks about how much he wants to look like a man, and then he realizes that the man he wants is of mixed race, and so he wants her too.
