In this short scene, the two young lovers discuss their relationship. They are "child hood friends" and are bound together because they are "bound together" . It is more "love" than "like" , they tell each other, and it is a "painful love" for them. When the lovers are alone, the narrator tells us, they are always best friends, but it is different during sex, when the lovers call each other by their first names. The narrator says that it is "like a curse" on them, and that they probably like each other very much.
