This chapter opens with a flashback to the events of the previous chapter, in which the narrator tells the reader that he was betrayed by his subordinate. He tells the story of how the two of them used to go on business trips together, and how the narrator would always lie to his employer about the business trip. When the narrator left, he told his employer that his friend was in town on a business trip, and the narrator went out of his way to bring him to a restaurant where he could have a wonderful view of the city at night. The narrator asks the narrator what he is like, and he answers that he is "grit" , and that he wants to do things that he could not do back then. He says that he used to think that his happiness would last forever, but that after he betrayed him, he was not able to do anything.
